What is the difference between a BIM consultant, a BIM manager and a BIM coordinator?
The BIM consultant works at the strategy level, the BIM manager runs the implementation on the project, and the BIM coordinator works at the operational level, directly with the design teams. The consultant defines the objectives, the information requirements and the use cases. The BIM manager organizes how the project runs: BEP, collaboration processes, CDE setup and quality monitoring. The coordinator organizes the day-to-day coordination between disciplines. A single mandate can combine or separate these roles, depending on the size of the project and the skills already available in-house.
Is BIM mandatory in Switzerland?
There is no general legal obligation to use BIM in Switzerland, but public clients increasingly require it in their tenders. This is notably the case at the federal level (FOBL, FEDRO, SBB) and for larger cantonal projects. Where BIM is required, it is required by the tender specifications, not by law. The KBOB recommendations and the ISO 19650 framework serve as references, without legally binding force.
What is OpenBIM?
OpenBIM refers to collaborative working methods based on open, vendor-neutral standards, mainly IFC for the models, IDS for the information requirements and BCF for coordination exchanges. The goal is that project data remains readable and usable regardless of the software each party uses. My practice is committed to OpenBIM: I work with these open formats so that the client does not depend on a single software vendor and exchanges between architects, engineers and specialists remain interoperable. This is the approach promoted by buildingSMART International and Bauen Digital Schweiz.
Which regions and languages do you work in?
I work throughout Switzerland, in French, German and English, remotely or on site. I cover French-speaking Switzerland, German-speaking Switzerland and bilingual contexts, including the federal administration, in every canton. The same consultant ensures continuity over the whole project, without a change of contact person from one language region to another.
